The old neighborhood

If you grew up in the 60s, 70s, or 80s in a city in the U.S. (shout out to Minneapolis Southside) I want you to think back to the neighborhood. If it was anything like mine we had old people. Some were sweet, others were scary. I learned so much from them and have fond memories.

Go down memory lane and remember what these old people were doing. Tinkering on cars, gardening, doing lawn work, sitting on the porch, watching a baseball game, cooking, walking to the post office, walking with their carts to get groceries. Walking to the library and hardware store as well. They were hanging clothes on the line, visiting with neighbors, putzing in the garage. They were maintaining their houses and bitching about us teenagers. Meal time was an event. They were fostering community, resting when needed, and staying active.

Do you remember what the old people of your youth looked like? Do you remember how they kept moving? What did they eat? Boxes of crap or actual food? Did they rely on doctors and pharmaceuticals like we do now? We are in much worse health than they were. Let’s change this. One step at a time. ♡
